December 23rd – Day 2 (aka Continental SUCKS!)

Again at Newark airport…this time waiting on standby on the 1:20PM flight. Again, oversold so of course, again, we couldn’t make it. Once again, I ended up camping out at the Service Desk as Ricky fumed away.

Oh, and get this...

1. Continental cancelled all our return flights again...with no explanation

2. Even though we had a confirmed flight for 12/24, that was also miraculously cancelled

3. They said they couldn't guarantee that we can get our CONFIRMED flight back because "corporate" is no longer allowing for oversold flights

We called for the manager, and the people at the service desk just ignored us, telling us to use the courtesy phone. So ask I sat on the floor rechecking our return flights, Ricky used the courtesy phone and we waited and waited and waited and all we got was, oh well, it's going to take a while. Finally, Ricky called Continental, got a manager on the line and managed to rebook the flight. So much for not overselling flights anymore "per corporate". We were still on the oversold list, but at least our flight was confirmed!! (We hope...)

December 22nd – Day 1 Hawai'i Trip

We missed the plane!! Once again, Ricky decided to leave for the airport at the very last minute, trusting that his driving skills will get us to the gate just in the nick of time. Since that policy had worked in the last 20+ years that Ricky had been speeding to airports, he didn’t see why it wouldn’t work today. Unfortunately, the Friday before Christmas is the busiest travel day of the year (duh!) and the check-in as well as the security line was incredibly long. We were late already, plus with the million people at the airport there wasn’t much that even the airline staff could do for us.

When we finally got to the check-in desk all they could do was book us on the next flight. To our dismay, they told us was going to be on December 29! Hawaii is just too popular a destination!!! As we contemplated the possibility that our trip would be cancelled and calculating our potential losses, our check-in agent informed us that we could be put on standby for the 1:20PM flight (or original was 7:50AM). A little hope is better than no hope, therefore, we agreed. For the next few hours, we hung out at the Newark Liberty Airport, having Sanku chicken for lunch and trying to entertain ourselves as much as we can.

The time came for the 1:20PM flight and we knew things looked bad when they called for people to give up their seats because the flight was oversold. In the end, we could not get on the plane L. From 2PM to 4PM we stayed at the service desk, trying to rebookour flights. Finally, we were put on standby again for 12/23 and confirmed for 12/25. Then came the issue of our baggage.

Our check-in lady had informed us that if we don’t make the flight, our bags also won’t make it. Unfortunately, as we have now come to expect from Continental, we found out when we got to Baggage Services (another floor) that our bags have already flown off to Honolulu. Well! Since we still plan to take the trip, we’ve decided that fine, just keep it there and we’ll catch up with it on 12/24 or better yet, 12/23. Then Baggage Lady said, oh wait, all your return trips have been cancelled!! I was about to cry, I was so tired from waking up super early, then waiting in the airport all day, then losing our luggage and then this!! But that’s life…Ricky and I vowed to avoid holiday travel at all costs from now on. In the end, the baggage lady was nice enough to help us rebook our flights for the way back. Ricky and I slowly and sadly made our way home.

What a miserable, nasty day

When days start bad, they usually stay bad...

I woke up at 8:30AM because Ricky forgot to set the alarm to wake up. Sure, I know I shouldn't blame it on him, but I specifically asked him if he was going to set the alarm before we went to bed and he had said yes. So sadly, I had to run around like a headless chicken and get ready within 15 minutes, which turned out to be around 20 minutes.

As I ran off to work, I thought...well as long as I don't have a 9:30 meeting, I will be fine. I didin't remember if I had a 9:30 meeting. It was the weekend!

First, as I was crossing the street this car turning right almost hit me. Oh, I wasn't jay walking, not this time...I actually had a WALK signal. This old lady drivng the car lowered her window and scream, "you wanna get your ass hit?" I was in too foul a mood to just take it and walk off, so I yelled back, "YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LET PEOPLE WALK!!" She said, "I HAVE A GREEN LIGHT!" Umm...lady, do you know how to drive??? Pedestrians always have the right of way!!! ARGH, how's that to a cheery start?

Then, I got to the PATH station and I knew something was wrong. The platform was incredibly crowded. Yet, a 33rd St. train quickly approach so maybe I caught a break. But no, once I got on, the conductor announced that due to smoke between 14th and 23rd street the train was to be rerouted to WTC. So I could get off, and the next train may end up going the same way, and be even more late. Or I stick it out and go to WTC and take the E, or course, I just wanted to go, so I stuck it out.

It then turns out, that today was one of the few few few days that I actually did have a 9:30 meeting. ARRGHHH!!! I walked in at 9:50 or so, yes very late, but luckily before the meeting moved to focus on my department so I was blessedly ignored for a good 30 minutes. No one gave me a hard time about it, but I feel bad about being late.

To add to the misery, I have this horrible cold and my nose keeps running, and running. The sniffing gave me this pounding headache so I was just generally miserable. Then of course on the way home, the train once again gave me trouble, being stalled on the tracks for at least 30 minutes. I need to sleep early and get this day over with!!!

Picture of the Day

St. Paul's Convent School - This is where I attended 3rd and 4th Grade in Hong Kong. I recall them as some of the worst times of my life. While I did fine grade-wise, I was considered a bad student because I often forgot to bring things to school. Photos, some book, something or another. Worst of all - in the eyes of the teachers - I didn't care. Australia taught me to relax, and I never really gave that up. Haha..thankfully, my parents mostly agreed with me rather than the teachers.

Team Lunch

I organized a team lunch for my team. I wanted it to be great, I really did and planned weeks in advance. The one mistake I made was to trust the admin I was working with with the details. Not only did she recommend a restaurant that does not allow for reservations, I had trusted her when she said that I did not need to worry, that a reservation was not necessary.

The whole team turned up for lunch on Friday and I learned that not only was the restaurant packed, they cannot seat parties larger than 6 at one table. I was utterly embarressed. Of course I felt that everyone thought that I was the one who couldn't even plan a team lunch. Yet, at that point, what could be done? Thankfully, others familiar with the area was able to recommend a restaurant close by that happened to have space for 15. We all walked over and ended up having quite a good time. This was despite the excitement of the fire alarm going off and firefighters coming in to fix the problem. Oh yes, very interesting indeed. On a up note, I did get a starbucks gift card as part of the gift exchange game we played. I'm sure that's something I can put to good use.

*Sigh* what an ordeal!!

Company Holiday Party

Just came home from the company holiday party. It was surprisingly lively! Granted the place was packed with 1500 people but the nutty dancing indeed took me by surprise. All in all, it was a great party the weather was perfect for it and the turnout was great. Open bar, great food, from an indian buffet to a carving station, to a pasta buffet. The dessert also proved delicious...nothing can beat chocolate covered strawberries! Most impressive was the location, La Capitale, a swanky function hall with beautiful domed ceilings and massive golden pillars. The building, oddly set in the middle of Chinatown on Bowery and Grand is simply beautiful. It was nice catching up with workfolk. Although I avoided making a fool of myself on the dancefloor...I still had plenty to drink and almost surprisingly, a lot of fun. :)

December 11 2006: Picture of the Day

Fields of flowers in Hokkaido - We went to Hokkaido mainly to see the lavender fields we are only in bloom for around 3 weeks in the year. These are not lavender, but they are beautiful aren't they?

Laundry

I hate doing laundry, hate hate hate hate it. While I know that it is a necessity of life, to me, it is the most brainless, boring housework there is. The most evil of the evils.

Sure I know it's easy enough to put the clothes into the machine then move them to the dryer, but then comes the folding. Facing a seemingly endless pile of clothes and folding each and every piece one by one, no shortcuts. Then always coming to the bottom of the pile with a missing sock or two, just enought o irritate. My back starts aching and shoulders tense every time. Once when it waited until it was late at night to start the laundry, I actually cried as I folded my little mountain of garments. Tears streamed down my face as I lamented the fact that I was tired and sleepy but could not sleep until I clear my clothing off my bed. I feel tense even writing about it and imagining the situation.

*Sigh* I really need a cleaning lady to come help out, the house is such a mess but I just don't have the motivation or ability to keep up with the grime.

Weekend June 9 to June 11: Citi, Finger, Scooba, Over the Hedge & Sushi Samba

Had a great weekend!

June 9 - Friday

Started calling Citi MAs in earnest, trying to get a clue as to the rotation-picking process before leaving for vacation. Was lucky. Got Columbia alumni MT at 9:30AM and DF at 11:30AM. They are so nice and helpful, I feel so much better now that I have a direction and people to contact. After leaving several voicemails with current MAs, I got a call from an MA who was willing to meet with me that afternoon at 2PM. I readily agreed.

Arrived in LIC at 2PM, met with wonderful and friendly 2005 MA who was nice enough to bring me to meet with another MA in a group that I was particularly interested in. All in all, I met with 4 incredibly friendly MAs and met a ton of people. Unfortunately all the Managers were either gone for the weekend or busy in their offices, I guess I'll have to set up meetings to speak with them. However, I am feeling great because I now know which direction I would like to go in and have so much more background information as to the structure of the MA program as well as Citi Cards overall.

That night, one bad thing happened.

The Target patio table arrived, I wanted to have it built before Ricky got home so I could impress him with it's beauty. :)

I set up shop near the door next to our big mirror, yes, bad choice. Just as Ricky was unlocking the door to come home, one of the parts of the table I was working on pushed the mirror too close to the wall and it came smashing down on me. To prevent the mirror from breaking, I stuck my hand under it at the last moment. The mirror didn't break, but the middle finger of my right hand caught the brunt of the fall. It hurt like a M%^@#$!! I thought my finger was broken. Turns out it was ok, but he pain was quite overwhelming. I stood up to get away from the mirror and table parts and started blacking out, I sat down, still black around the edges of my vision, so I lay down on the floor and took deep breaths. After maybe 10 minutes, the pain started to subside, I could move my finger (slightly) so I knew it wasn't broken.

After I recovered, Ricky took me out to La Isla for dinner. I think partially to help me recover from my almost broken finger predicament. I had steak, was craving it for a while. Yummy! I felt much better after that.

June 10 - Saturday
Ricky slept late, as usual, but for some reason I woke up at 8:30 and couldn't fall back asleep. As result was groggy most of the day. Instead, I put together the rest of the patio dining table and manuevered it outside. My finger still hurt, but not so bad now.

To celebrate the new table, we grilled rack of ribs leftover from our Memorial Day grill party as lunch. Was good, but a little too burnt. Ricky is not that good with the grill. Afterwards, we went to Edgewater to the Sharper Image to buy the Scooba.

A friend, VW, had bought us a Roomba Discovery as a housewarming present. A wonderful present, but unfortunately we had already bought one for ourselves. Therefore, we returned it and got a Scooba instead. V. happy!

Afterwards, we drove over to the cinema just in time to catch Over the Hedge. Hilarious animated feature about woodland animals venturing over the hedge to gather food from humans in suburbia. Loved how the movie made fun of humans (our lives are all about food!)

Met with the crew for dinner in Flushing.

June 11 - Sunday

Had every intention of taking part in the Da Vinci Code hunt in the Met (from an email that Nancy sent). Ended up being late. Met R & U, C and J at Sushi Samba for brunch. It was a pretty amazing brunch! I didn't even kn ow Sushi Samba had brunch!

They offered a "family style" menu for groups of at least 2 people. You choose three courses from column A and another three from column B and it's $15 each person. Ricky and I decided to share and we had Brazilian Warm Churros, two types of rolls, steak and eggs and french toast. Six courses for two people! But the food was delicious.

After lunch we figured we'd go to The Met and see how the hunt was going. Unfortunately, this is the same day as the Puerto Rico Day parade and the area by the Met was a big mess. The crowds were gregarious, and I think a lot of them were drunk...haha... Besides to get to 82nd and 5th, we had to walk to 72nd St. first just to get through the police barricades. Was nuts! So decided to give up and go home. Too bad...next time! :)

Happy First Anniversary!!

June 3rd 2006 is Ricky and my first wedding anniversary. We made it! One full year. :)

To celebrate, I sent out a last minute invitation to the crew for brunch at Amanda's, one of the fanciest restaurants in Hoboken. Since we unexpectedly arrived as a large group of 7, the manager set up a semi-private dining room for us near the back of the restaurant. I ordered poached eggs with crab hash and Ricky ordered the steak and eggs. Both dishes were amazing, the steak especially was very impressive.

After lunch, it took us a while to decide where to go to. We ended up going to BJ's in Paramus and as an anniversary present, Ricky bought me an elliptical! YAY!!

After that, we drove out to Riverside Mall to the Barnes & Nobles there. Since the Cheesecake Factory is also conveniently located at Riverside Square, we put out names down and proceeded to peruse through the bookstore and other stores at the Mall. Before we knew it, the buzzer sounded and we had a table (it was a one hour wait which went by real fast). The food at Cheesecake Factory is always a crowd pleaser. I had salad, which came as a small mountain of veggies and steak. Ricky had the bang bang chicken and shrimp, very tasty in coconut peanut sauce. It was almost midnight by the time we got home, but we had a very happy anniversary indeed!

Summer Arts Challenge 1: MOMA (and a celebrity sighting!!)

My first museum of the challenge was MOMA, for two reasons. First, Ricky's office is right by there so I can pick him up after work. Second, MOMA is the only museum that is open so late on a Friday, because it has Target free Friday nights. Since I got to the city at around 4PM I didn't have too many choices.

The Celebrity Sighting
I decided to take the 33r St. line, and change for the V train at 23rd St, which would take me to 53 and 5th, just half a block from MOMA. The sky was clouding up as I went into the PATH, and I knew it was going to rain, but museums are indoors, what better entertainment destination during a storm? Sure enough, as I waited on the platform for the V train, fellow passengers stumbled in with wet umbrellas, it had started to pour outside! After two F trains passed, I finally got onto the V train.

The train was pretty empty...I found a seat and sat and it was then that I noticed, sitting diagonally across from me (facing my direction) was Kiefer Sutherland! Kiefer Sutherland on the V train! I was pretty excited... and started debating many options of action in my head.

Choice 1: Go talk to the guy and ask for a photo. I had my camera in my bag, ready for use, but did I have the courage to walk up to Jack Bauer in a subway train? How would he react?

Choice 2: Sneak a photo of him with my camera phone. So, being somewhat chicken, I thought, maybe...I can pretend to be playing a game on my phone! But then, I know celebrities hate that stuff, and if he catches me, what if he gets pissed and berates me on the train? Hmmm...

Choice 3: Do nothing, and just sneak glances at him while pretending to read a book. Keep the excitment to myself with the camera in my head.

As I pondered my choices and wondered why Kiefer Sutherland would be riding the subway in the first place, we arrived at 42nd St, Bryant Park, which apparently was Kiefer Sutherland's stop. With his back turned to me, waiting to get off, I stared at the man's back, no longer needing to sneak glances...oh well, maybe next time.

I called Ricky as soon as I got off my stop at 53rd to tell him that I saw Jack Bauer on the subway. Of course he asked whether I talked to the guy and I said...of course not, that would be weird. But all the time, it was my second celebrity sighting in NYC and although all the action took place inside my head, it was fun. :)

MOMA

So the Museum of Modern Art is a pretty amazing place. I was just there about 3 weeks ago, but there was still so much I hadn't seen because I just got too tired from walking. The same happened this time, after 2 hours or so of modern art appreciation, my feet were tired and I was ready to meet Ricky for dinner.

This time, I enjoyed works by such famous artists: Andy Warhol, Frank Gehry, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Vincent Van Gogh, and many others...

As I snapped pictures of the artwork, I started to make a game of capturing myself reflected in the various "reflective" works of art, here are some photos I took. For more, go to my Flickr page.

Summer Arts Challenge

Woke up early to take the car to the Honda dealer with Ricky. So sleepy still! We thought the freon might be leaking out of the AC unit, but apparently, there was nothing wrong with the car at all. It was just so hot the past couple of days that the car's AC was not strong enough to keep up.

Today, I received an email from the ISSO with recommended fun things to do in the city! There are a full 27 museums that I can get into for free with a Columbia student ID.

CUArts.com

So I've decided to give myself a little challenge! Before leaving for Hong Kong, I will try to visit as many of these museums as I can. Gives me something to do, and sounds like fun!

Memorial Day Grill Party

On Memorial Day, we invited the gang over for a grill party. We bought ribs, steaks, veggies, drinks, fired up the grill and basically ate a ton of food. The hot dogs were popular, as always, and the ribs were also extremely good. I'm proud to say that I marinated the ribs, and although they were a little charred, they tasted great.

Brownie also had a wonderful time, chasing after everyone with food and getting enough treats and tidbits to keep him very very happy. We also got some use of the new swivel patio chairs which were are big hit with the guests.

R made his famous flourless chocolate cake which we ate with ice cream that A bought...so good.
After the feast, we gathered around the play Scattegories, the only game that we were up to playing after each eating just too much meat.

The next day, I had indigestion. Haha...small price to pay for a good party!

Blah Blah Day

Memorial Day weekend officially began!

Today was pretty uneventful. The contractors came and finished up the roof this morning and were gone shortly after lunch.

Then I waited for U. and R. to come by, they were buying me lunch from Mitsuwa, they are so sweet. By the time they got to my house, it was already 4PM. Apparently, they, plus C & A wanted to see a new condo for sale at Riverbend in Edgewater called The Hudson Club. I decided to ride along.

We saw a couple of one and two bedrooms, they were quite expensive, which was really to be expected. The cheapest one bedroom was $425K and the most expensive unit we saw was a three bedroom that cost $753K. Of course, these are luxury condos and the maintenance fees included full use of the club house with a gym, pool, jacuzzi, basketball court, and other amenities, which were really quite attracted. My favorite unit was a 2 bedroom duplex that came fully funished and decorated for $695K. I know I would never purchase such a place, but it was just so beautiful. To be honest, I felt a little bad that the agent showed us so many places and we really didn't have the intention to buy. But I guess for him, that's just the cost of doing business.

After Ricky got home, we met up again and went to Bertucci's for dinner. For some reason, I think the quality of the food there is going down. I don't know if it's because I'm used to going to Vespa where the food is so much better. In any case, I doubt I will be going back to Bertucci's any time soon. I had the lasanga, on of their signature dishes, and it was really too sour for my taste. Not really what I had expected from them at all.

Fireworks in Jersey City

More fireworks pictures. Last night I didn't think they turned out so well, but after a little cropping, they actually look pretty good!

Is May 24th special?

I got 3 out of office email messages, and, unexpected fireworks at night! I was sitting around, watching TV when I heard a sudden BOOM, was quite frightening really. Then I looked out the window and saw the fireworks. They were SO close! I had a better view of the fireworks from my house than when I sent to see fireworks on purpose. I wonder...is May 24th a special day?

I managed to submit my passport for renewal today, very happy, another thing off my list of things to do. In 10 days I should be able to pick up my new passport and be ready to take off!

Some bad news

Our tenant, D.'s house (downstairs) got broken into. D left a message with us last night, but I was sleeping, so we didn't pick up the phone. We just found out about it tonight.

Not too much was stolen, laptop, cash, camera. The scary thing is that the thieves hacked through the top of the lock on the METAL front door. It is of course, the same lock that we have on our doors. Now I have to go out and buy a new lock so we can install a new door. *sigh*

I WON!

It was a rough few days battling with the flu/cold virus. Today was especially bad. I woke up, felt awful, but decided to read Da Vinci code for a while because I didn't think I could go back to sleep. Ricky woke up and came downstairs and turned on the TV, which gave me a headache, so I went back to bed to read, but ended up lying down trying to sleep. Which was hard because I was so congested, couldn't breathe...so uncomfortable. Two hours later, I ventured out of bed again, went downstairs, watched TV with Ricky until 3PM or so, had some soup, and crawled back into bed.

That was it, the crucial nap. The rest my body needed to divert it's resources to fighting this big bad virus. When I went to bed, both my hands and feet were freezing, I woke up and was super hot and sweaty. But I felt better. My joints were no longer achy and my congestion cleared some what. Ricky said it was DayQuil, I think it was because I WON! My WBC's conquered the nasty virus that was making me so miserable. HAR HAR. I was even strong enough to go out for dinner.

Now...Ricky has a sore throat....

Da Vinci Code - The Movie

Still sick today, but a little better than yesterday. My voice came back so at least I can speak!

My cousin H decided to take the flight back to Hong Kong today, so she took us out to a nice brunch and we drove her out to JFK to catch her flight. Lunch was at the 3 Forty Restaurant in Hoboken, right on the riverfront, very pretty! The traffic to JFK was heavy, but manageable and we made good time. H gave me hourly updates on whether we would be able to get on the plane and luckily, she did!

After dropping H off, we drove to Columbia to pick up the stuff I had left in my locker. It is so sad to think that I will hardly even visit that the place I had frequently almost daily for the past two years. The lobby in Uris Hall was under construction and I suppose will be spanking new and beautiful for the new class of 2008.

On the way home, we stopped by Target to pick up some basics. Target! My favorite store! :) The coolest new purchase are solar powered outdoor lights that we placed in strategic locations on the deck. I love them! The deck was so dark before and going down the stairs a night was often frightening, now, the subtle deck illumination makes things safer and adds a bot of mood lighting to the surroundings.

Finally, we met up with C&A, E and A to see The Da Vinci Code. The movie was eh...ok. It actually kind of dragged and there wasn't enough action to make the movie exciting. All the intellectual exercises in the book had to be skimmed over to keep the story moving and that really took away from the "revelation" factor that made the book so interesting. I'd give it a 3+ out of 5, knowing how hard it must have been to translate such a complicated plot into a 2.5 hr screenplay.

Sick Day

Very sick today. My voice started going last night, and I was hoping it would get better by the morning but not, it was worse. I sound like sandpaper on metal. :(

Signed the contract on Westside Station today! YAY! So happy, I am so eager to get the house off my hands. The price was not bad too, even though we are not making much money, at least we are not losing money. Since the house is not in Downtown New Jersey, it is just too much for Ricky and I to manage. Pretty amazing though, we listed with an agent for 3 days and right away we had a good offer! NICE!

The Day I Lost my Rings

May 4th, Thursday, I thought I lost both my wedding and engagement rings. Needless to say, I was hysteric. Hysterical was an understatement. I spent the night searching all over the house, even ran out to the curb to pick up the bag of trash that I had thrown out, and went through that. The next day, I spent the entire day scouring the house for them. By Saturday, when I was absolutely certain that there was no where else I could look, I gave up. Lo and behold! Sunday night, I took a shower before leaving for a dinner Dis-orientation event. When I walked out of the shower, there my rings were, sitting on the bathroom counter top, the same place that I had look, so so many times. Plain as day. Very weird....

Here's the list I had made of every activity I did on May 4, in my desperation to figure out where I could possibly have lost my ring.

Woke up at 10:16 or so
Broke onion holder lid
Looked for glue to fix lid
Made coffee, drank coffee
Made garlic bread for breakfast
Got call from mom at 11 or so to get phone card

Cut blinds for about 3 hours, around 4 to 5PM when quit
Still remember seeing ring on at this time
Changed in living room, took clothes from dryer and new pants
Watched sportskool on on Demand for warm up
Stretched outside in yard
Went for run – riverwalk to past grand hyatt and back
Went home, took off knee brace got poo poo bags
Took brownie for walk
Also on river walk, picked up 2 more poo poo bags
Let him run around in Liberty State Park
Walked him home
Almost 8PM when I got home
Went to open window, too tight
Opened Patio door and then got brownie his water
Went back to open the window successfully
Watch TV on sofa or blue step
Ricky called to say he is coming home
Switched to watch Top Chef
Cut remaining blinds on floor
Heated up dinner in microwave
Watched Amazing Race with dinner
Ricky came home with dinner
Watched amazing race…at the end, Ricky came back to watch 24
Took out trash at beginning of 24
Went to take off contacts in bathroom (ring?)
Back to 24
After 24, went to take shower
After shower, sat on bed to read
Started looking for ring

Spring Break: Peru!! (Day 1) - LIMA

Although I am now recounting the Peru trip two months later, I didn't want to just forget about it and not document one of the most amazing trips of my life. A true adventure type adventure -- for wussies, true -- but probably as far as I would ever step into the realm of "roughing it." The trip consisted of roughly 8 days, with four days and three nights spent on the Inca Trail.

Official Itinerary

SAT 04 …/ LIMA (Altitude: 154 m.a.s.l)

Lodging.

I actually skipped this day because we decided to take the Continental flight that arrived late at night on March 4th. It was a rough start to the trip, we had to wait at the airport for an hour for a phantom classmate who never showed up. By the time we arrived at the hotel, it was already past midnight and we were told that the wake up call the next day would be at 3AM!!! Usa, Kim and I were on the same flight and we ended up sharing one dingy, hot room for just 1.5 hours. We were all exhausted though and 1.5 hrs of sleep was better than nothing!!

Valentine's Day 2006

Valenitne's Day!!! Day of love, hugs and kisses.

But after 5 years of living together, Ricky and I get plenty of love, hugs and kisses everyday. So how do you make this on day special-er? We discussed the romantic possibilities and decided that instead of getting each other presents, we'd just save the money to take a trip together in the future! Hey, why not be more practical?

As for the standard dinner, we decided to take care of that as well before actual Valentine's day. I mean, why get ripped off and pay more for a mass cooked meal at a nice restaurant? So we made reservations last Friday at Danube, one of the best (and most expensive) restaurants in the City. We ordered the tasting menu....yummy! I started with the tuna sashimi then the lobster then the NY strip with foie gras and the souffle. Ricky also started with the tuna sashimi, then the halibut, then veal schnitzel and finally also the souffle. Yummm.....

While we didn't plan to go out to dinner again we did! Haha...we went to Hoboken to return the Wedding Crashers DVD and was lucky enough to catch a car just vacating it's parking spot! It was just too good to be true, so we decided to take it first, then think. We walked tover to La Isla, the best cuban restaurant ever and since it was not crowded (for once) we decided to celebrate Valentine's day there. While it's a very casual hole in the wall restaurant, we had candlelight and flowers on the table. It was still very romantic and I just LOVE the food there! I also got a dozen roses from Ricky. So they were from thue PATH train guy, so what!? Why overpay for the same flowers and nicer packaging..I put them ina vase and they look beautiful, very fresh! Overall, it was a great V-Day. :)

The largest snowstorm in the history of New York City!

Today, the tri-state area was hit with the largest snowstom in the history of New York city. With snowfall in Central Park reaching 23 inches high. Snow started falling last night at around 8PM and didn't stop until 4PM today. The flakes were large and fluffy. While we went to sleep with almost no snow on the ground, we woke up to very significant accumulation.

On our new deck, the snow reached above my knee almost to mid-thigh! As Ricky shoveled, we let Brownie out to play in the fuzzy white stuff. He enjoyed himself immensely! Brownie can plow through the snow much faster than I thought, he just leap right through and fell right in, so cute.

For lunch, we ventured out in the "blizzard-like" conditions to take the PATH to Hoboken and join Usa and Ray and them at Oddfellows. The food there was really good! I was impressed, and pleasantly suprised. After lunch, we hiked back to Ray's place to play mahjong. On the way back, we threw snowballs at each other and ran around in the snow...it was so much fun. Mahjong was fun too, but Euhan won overall...bummer! After we got really tired of playing mahjong, we went out for dinner. We wanted to go to Satay but it was closed because of the snowstore, so instead, we went to Sushi Lounge. Their rolls are so yummy, I especially love the Hoboken roll. Sooo..gooooood....

Fast Foward...

To today! I'm so behind on my vacation stories I figured I'd just really quickly update to today, and make up for the lost time slowly.

I finally tried out the acupuncture, acupressure place that opened on Grove street today. Just had a 30 min massage, not bad! Chinese tua na is pretty special...it's not expensive for New York standards, but still, expensive enough for me to budget my exposure. Next I want to try the acupuncture, but I need to set up an appointment to see the doctor. Love having the place so close, but worried that they might shut down for lack of business! What can you do...

Good news! Ricky got 2 more job offers! That brings the total count to 4. The great thing is, these most recent ones are the ones that he actually wants. I'm so happy for him!

Taipei, Taiwan! Dec. 30 - Jan 3.

After so so so so many years (say 5?) away from Taipei, I am finally going home! In many ways, Taiwan is my home more so than Hong Kong is, I lived there for 8 years of my life. Which actually is the longest duration I've remained in one city ever. Best of all, Taiwan as THE BEST FOOD! Noodles, fried chicken on the street, the most pure soymilk ever....soooo gooooooooood.

Day 1 consisted of the plane ride and waiting in the hotel to check in. No so interesting really. We had a late lunch and then went out to dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Liao, my dad's old colleagues. The restaurant was pricey of course, but very good. The best way to describe it was as a Chinese/Japanese restaurant. The white tuna sashimi was incredibly fresh, and to Ricky's delight, Mr. and Mrs. Liao ordered a fresh alaskan king crab. The gigantic crab was sitting happily in its tank and then it ended up salt-baked on our table. Needless to say, very fresh. :)

Day 2, we decided to go to Wu Lai (烏來), a hot springs resort area. We went to a hot spring "resort" (these are all really small) called Beauty Spa (美人湯). Being shy as we are, instead of going to a group hot spring (you have to be naked) we booked our own little rooms. So Ricky and I had our own room with two tubs, one big one for hot spring water and the other for ice cold freezing water. The idea is that after you get really hot in the hot water, you plunge yourselve into the freezing water for a while, then back and forth. It's supposed to be good for your skin (stimulates the pores) and your circulatory system. The water came through taps, but this way it is much cleaner and more private (of course). The room also has a view, so as you relax in the incredibly hot tub of water, you also can look out over the mountains.

I was so relaxed afterwards, I kept yawning on the way to lunch. :) For lunch we went to the local "mountain people" (山地人) or aborigini run restaurants where they serve very local specialties. They even grow their own vegetables and these are vegetables that aren't for sale anywhere else in the world. The bamboo rice was also extremely good, a little bit sweet with the smell of bamboo baked right into the rice.

The restaurant was situated on a busy street full of little restaurants and shops, mostly run by the local aboriginis. The area is famous for the sticky sweet dough (mua ji) covered with seasame powder, iced eggs, and other street eats. Ricky bought a huge pork sauage from a stall that called itselft the first "black pig sausage" stall in the area. The sausage was pretty huge, and I think Ricky liked it!

After Wu Lai, we drove home to rest and get ready for Cathy's wedding. I was pretty excited because I would get to see a lot of old friends from TAS who I hadn't seen for years! The wedding was Chinese style, so it was not very personal (but of course!). But Cathy looked gorgeous. After the wedding, we took the car to a little bar where TAS was holding a New Year's Eve party. The plan originally was to first go home and change into more casual clothing. But the streets were so packed with cars (because it was New Years Eve) that we barely got to the bar on time.

After the countdown, Ricky and I hightailed it back to the hotel, we were tired. It took 30 minutes to go one block. We saw an ambulance stuck in the traffic in front of us and I thought, if it really was an emergency, the guy is probably dead. The streets were flooded with people, trying to get rides and then deciding it was better to walk. The subways were so fully that people were kept waiting outside the stops until people started clearing out. Nuts! But kinda fun to watch from the safter of your own car. Ha ha... In the end, Ricky and I walked through the middle of a NYEve concert to get back to the hotel...very eventful!

Day 3, was a tour of Taipei city. We started with breakfast at a local market (noodles, yummy) and then headed over to the Palace Museum of Taiwan (故宮博物館). It's a must see for any tourist as the museum houses a lot of treasures that Chiang Kai Shek took from China when he fled the communists. The downer was that the main museum was under construction, hence a lot of the largest (and most spectacular) pieces were put away. Bummer... more for Ricky than for me. Then we had lunch. After lunch, Uncle Keith came and picked us up to go to more places. First we went to the Martyr's Shrine and was just in time to catch the changing of the guard (there's this whole ceremony -very fun). Then we went to the Grand Hotel for some pictures, another tourist must-see. After that, we stopped by the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial for some pictures. Whew, whirlwind tour of Taipei.

We went to a highly recommended Japanese restaurant for dinner, but Ricky was sick of Japanese food and therefore in a bit of a "mood". Food is THE most important thing for him. Haha... plus, before dinner we dropped bya mini night market (just happend to walk by) and bought fried stuff from a fried chicken stall (salty crunchy chicken). Ricky prefered the street vendors to the fancy restaurants, so even though we ruined our appetites for dinner, it was OK.

After dinner, we took the mass transit (me for the first time in Taiwan!) to Shi Lin Night Market, the largest night market in Taipei. It was really crowded! We walked around, just to get the "experience" but didn't really buy anything. I wasn't in the mood to push around with other people just to buy cheap stuff. But we did buy food...fried chicken steaks (there was a line), malaysian "pulled" tea (which came in a plastic bag...so Taiwan), pepper cakes, lots of yummy stuff at night markets. :)

Day 4, my parents left today becaue my mom has some cantonese opera performance on 1/3 that she had to go prepare for. Ricky and I decided to just take it easy and chill out. We went to some of the shopping malls in the area just to see the city (as the locals do!). We made it a point to go to a bubble tea place that is famous for being "the first" bubble tea store in Taiwan. Started in Tai Chung, it opened a chain store in Taipei, no doubt knowing they could make a few extra $$ that way. Then we spent a few hours at Eslite book store, 8 stories with a coffee shop, a tea shop, gift shop, etc. Ricky and I love buying books...so we went nuts. Ricky bought mostly books for learning Chinese, which often not available in the U.S. I bought some souvenirs for Helen and Heidi. For Helen, and architect book, and for Heidi, a day planner printed especially by Eslite...and a Chinese novel for myself.

We got lost in the book store, had too much fun, and was almost late to Catherine's b-day party!! The party was at a Xin Jiang barbecue place, very cute. The only draw back is the Xin Jiang people eat a lot of lamb, and we don't...ugh. But the company was great, my old TAS friends. It was so much fun catching up and seeing what everyone is doing now. Yuting and Andrea, who weren't at Cathy's wedding also came, so it was nice seeing them!

Day 5, after one last Taiwanese style lunch, it was time to go back to HK. I'm gonna miss Taiwan!

As tourists in Hong Kong... - Dec. 27 - 29

I've never been a tourist in Hong Kong. It was an interesting point of view to adapt as I took Ricky to the various attractions that never bothered to go to.

Dec. 27 - Victoria Harbour
I had allotted today for the "spectacular" views of the HK harbour as so often described in travel guidebooks to Hong Kong. However, the morning broke foggy and dreary, ugh, so unlucky! Nevertheless, Ricky did not have much time to spare in his whirlwind tour of HK, therefore we went according to plan.
We met up with Helen over on the Kowloon side on the "Avenue of the Stars." It's a little tourist attraction that Hong Kong came up with to copy Hollywood with handprints of the stars and all, except these are Asian stars. They als have a statue of Bruce Lee there, also a popular tourist attraction. Here are pictures of my handprint, compared to Andy Lau's (my childhood idol) and Ricky with Jackie Chan's. :)

That night, it started raining, so after walking around for a while, Ricky and I just went home and rested after eating dinner at the ramen place in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Dec. 28 - I don't remember what we did on the 28th... pathetic right? :) That's what happens when you don't update your blog in a timely fashion!

Dec. 29 - Mom, Dad, Helen, Ricky and I drove out to Sai Kung, an area of Hong Kong famous for it's seafood for lunch. The day was beautiful, sunny and breezy! We walked along the ocean front looking for a good place to eat and admiring the views. It was amazing how clear water can be in Hong Kong. I always felt that the little island is so incredibly polluted, but in Sai Kung, you could see the fish swimming in the sea, and there were schools of them right by the pier, very pretty.

We decided to have lunch at Hung Kee, one of the first restaurants we came across. The way it works in Sai Kung is that each restaurant has tanks of fresh seafood sitting out side. Crabs, fish, lobster, shrimp, squid, they are just happily swimming around. Then you come along and go, I want that one...and the next thing they know, they are cooked and on your table. Ha ha...sounds cruel...but Chinese people need their food fresh, and there is nothing more fresh than seeing them swimming around one minute, watch them being caught, and then see them sitting on your table...as a dish! :) After lunch, Ricky and my Mom went and explored the seafood for sale by the pier. Fishermen go out and catch what they can, then sell it right out of little boats to people onthe pier. It's a pretty cool experience.

After Sai Kung, we drove back to the city. We were scheduled to have dinner at Grandma's that night, so we went and hung out there for a while. Because we were bored, Ricky and I went to the Hong Kong Products Expo taking place in Victoria Park. The Park is just a block from my grandma's so we figured we'd go check it out. The place was really crowded. But we navigated through and I got to try a lot of free taster's food. Soup, noodles, candy, dried pork, sauces, medicines, you name it! I thought it was kinda fun. :) But just too crowded...we bought some snacks: nuts and crackers and famous HK milk tea...and went home with many packages.

Christmas in Hong Kong - Dec. 25 - 26

I just got back to the U.S. yesterday and already miss Hong Kong. It's a crazy city with too many people all moving at a pace much too fast. The efficiency of the people is striking, everything is done in fast forward. Customer service is immensely impressive provided with such speed, accuracy, courtesy with at least the appearance of amazing enthusiam. There are greeters at McDonalds and even banks, it's just amazing.

Anyways, I spent a week in Hong Kong just traveling to SZ and back, doing a little shopping, getting over jet lag.

Dec. 21.
Mom and I visited the tallest building in Shen Zhen, really not very tall. But my dad's cousin, auntie Margaret was visiting from Australia, so we decided to take her there for a little look see. The theme of the top floor was SZ-HK, because you can see HK easily from there, which to some Chinese "continentals" is the closest they can get to HK. To be honest, the views sucked because of the smog covering both cities, but I guess it was an "experience."

Dec. 25
Ricky arrived on December 25th, just in time for Christmas and my grandma's birthday party. I picked Ricky up at the airport express in the morning. I was determined to take him to the 'touristy' places in HK because he never had a chance to go the last time he visited. We were too busy planning for the wedding and all. Since Ricky said he had slept well on the plane, we decided to make good use of the afternoon and hit the peak. We took the peak tram up an impossibly steep slope .

Then we walked the "loop" around Victoria Peak to get an aerial view of HK, it is a surprisingly beautiful city, the buildings have such impressive architecture. At 2:30 we met up with my parents for lunch at Cafe Deco.

After lunch mom and dad dropped us of at the Wan Chai convention center. The site of the WTO conference not just a week ago. Now that the delegates have left the city, the place is once again crawling with tourists. It was also the site of the annual video game expo, which turned out to be much for fascinating then I thought. Although we didn't go inside (neither of us are big video gamers) we did see the people who were dressed up as characters of video games congregating in the public space. They posed for reporters and friends alike, wearing otherworldly costumes and wigs. Very entertaining.

That night was my grandma's birthday party, an annual gathering of family and friends that I have been lucky enough to be able to attend almost every year. This year was quite special since Noel, Helen, Heidi and I were all able to make it. In past years, either one person or another would be missing since we now all live in different locations. It was so cool to have all four of us together again, singing karaoke. :)

Dec. 26
Helen, my cousin the architect now living in Sydney, loves to drive. She also happens to know the roads in Hong Kong quite well. Therefore, we drove Ricky, mom and I to Repulse Bay a popular beach and toursit attraction. In Chinese the beach is called "Shallow Water Bay," I have no idea why it is Repulse in english, so unattractive! There is a popular Temple in Repulse Bay with many statues of buddhist gods and such that provides great photo ops for tourists and the like. Going to Repulse Bay brought back memories when I used to go there as a kid, with Helen no less. We'd picnic with our parents, setting up camp on the sand and eating chicken wings in between building sand castles and irrigating canals for sea water. Ahh...the good old days.

After Repulse Bay, we drove to Stanley Market, another popular tourist attraction. Stanley is full of small shops and outlets that foreigners love to wonder through. Unfortunately, Ricky was not into shopping there so it was kinda a bummer for me too. We visited the old Murray House, a government building built back in the colonial days in Central (on HK island), but was moved stone by stone and restored in Stanley so that it's architecture could be preserved. Now Murray House houses several restaurants and the Maritime Museum. The views of the ocean from Stanley are beautiful. The little town also has many cute little al fresco restaurants, built specifically to cater to the foreigners who often live in the area. It's like a little seaside retreat, very special.

We contemplated staying in Stanley for dinner but decided against it since Helen and my mom both had a commitments that night. Interestingly, Ricky and I ended up going to Helen's "commitment", a party at the house of an interior designer, auntie Angel's friend. Auntie Angel called and asked if Ricky and I had plans and we said...ehh, no. So she invited us to go along. It was an interesting crowd...to say the least. It's hard to have too much fun among strangers, but it was fine...good food at least!

Hong Kong and the WTO - December 18th, 2005

The first week in Hong Kong was also the week of the WTO. The atmosphere was quite tense in town, especially around the Wan Chai area, where the conference actually took place. I think the people in HK was over-reacting a little to the WTO, in typical HK fashion the protests were overall very peaceful. On the last day of the Conference, farmers from South Korea clashed with the police, who blasted them with pepper spray and high pressure water canons. The news kept repeating scenes of protestors attempting to overturn the police van, but that was really the extent of the violence. Few people were hurt and businesses were pretty much intact and ready to go after the event.

I ran into the protestors marching out of Victoria Park one day and took pictures. :)

Every day the protestors congregated in Victoria Park and marched along a pre-determined path towards Wan Chai where the convention center is.

There were police escorts along the way of course, as well a volunteers who were around to help keep order.

The pictures below I took in the park the day before. They are of artwork that accompanied the protestors, set up int the park for dispay.
I know they look quite creepy but of course, the point was to make an impact. Personally, I'm not sure how I feel about the WTO. I'm also not knowledgeable enough about the issues to be qualified to even have an opinion. HK is still struggling with the WTO as the government had arrested some protestors whoe they are now trying in court. Protestors of the hearings are on hunger strike outside the courthouse, demanding that their comrades be freed. I think HK is in for a long and public battle, but it is a great learning experience for the little city.
